Stirring controversy with a name

Not sure who to side with really

As we all know, social media is currently flooded with videos and posts coming out from the US. These social media posts revolve around the riots which were sparked off by the death of an African American George Lloyd, after he died of asphyxiation because a White police officer in Minneapolis used his knee to crush George's windpipe.

Somehow this killing created a global movement where people from outside of the US also joined in a call for Black Lives Matter. It seems that Singapore is not to be spared from this.

A friend sent me this screenshots showing local rapper Subhas Nair calling out the Lion City Boy Shigga Shay for having a rap name that is "a play on a racial slur". While I am not well-versed in the local rap scene, it seems Subhas might be saying that Shigga is a slur for the n* word?

In any case, Shigga Shay has responded to this by saying that his stage name came from Chinese words "是个谁" (Shi Ge Shui or Shigga Shay).

Subhas Nair does not seem to believe this explanation and has continued to demand Shigga to acknowledge his "anti-black" name and do the right thing, I assume by apologising.

What a small world we live in. Even things happening in the US can stir unhappiness in Singapore.
