But is there really a cause for celebration in Singapore?
Looking back at the same World Index I touched on earlier, I realized that Singapore has something to be shameful about. This was especially so when viewed against the backdrop of today being International Women's Day. Look at the best countries for women to work abroad. I am surprised that Singapore was not among the best.
Does this also subtly hint of a gender inequality despite us being a First World country? I know that men generally earn higher starting incomes than women given that they have played their part for the nation by serving a two-year stint in the army. I guess I can live with that starting inequality. But if the scale rates the overall career paths for women, and there is still a penalty on women, then it is of concern.
In any case, the only consolation from this is that Singapore is not among the 10 worst countries for woman to work abroad. Sigh. Anyway happy 三八妇女节 to all ladies out there!
