In which I discuss the $600 payment may be a joke
In the latest Solidarity Budget announced by Minister Heng Swee Keat in Parliament, one of the key points was Singaporeans being granted an additional $300. Wait, didn't I mention it was $600? Well, for those of who have not caught the news, the government initially announced $300 for every adult Singaporean (aged 21 and above) in the Care and Support Budget. So with this latest announcement, it would be $300 + $300 = $600.
So why is this blog post calling the $600 Solidarity Payment a farce? As most of us will know by now, Singapore is in a state of, DORSCON RED (okay I joke, don't send me a POFMA legal letter), Circuit Breaker period until 4 May 2020. Despite the government stepping up safe distancing measures and other health warnings, Singaporeans continued to see throngs of people flouting these rules by loitering or gathering.
While Safe Distancing Ambassadors have been deployed and issuing stern warning letters, they are but a bunch of toothless tigers. In a desperate attempt to curb these so-called Covidiots, the government announced anyone flouting Circuit Breaker measures will be fined $300 immediately. That's half of your Solidarity Payment gone. Poof.
I secretly suspect the government may be confident in clawing back part or all of these $600 given especially to Covidiots who insist on breaking the CB rules. Just Stay Home and Stay Safe!
