The practicality of festivals

When does one become more important than another?

There was a bit of a hoo-ha when the Tanjong Pagar GRC and Radin Mas SMC apparently organized a Halloween Fright Night during the end of October. This was despite end October being the same time when Hindus celebrate Deepavali. Some questioned why Halloween was being prioritized over some random imported holidays.

I do agree with how some people have complained about this issue. The multi-cultural and multi-religious aspects of Singapore are what make us unique. This appears to be a slightly offensive act in sidelining the celebrations of Hindus. Instead of teaching the population about the significance of Deepavali, the Residents' Committee seems to have given more emphasis on Halloween.

Looking this issue from a financial perspective, I can vaguely imagine why Halloween has been etched into Singapore's society - the amount of money it generates could be more. See how much could be generated when people buy Halloween costumes, candies, and even go out for parties. Unfortunately Singapore is a pragmatic society. However, this does not give anyone the right to sideline another's festive celebrations.

We can do better.
